In Figure 12-1 the user is running a browser somewhere on the Internet. The Oracle Collaboration Suite middle tier consists of two Oracle Application Server middle tier instances in the firewall DMZ; one runs only the Real-Time Collaboration server, the other runs all the other components. The infrastructure instance with the Collaboration Suite database is behind the internal firewall. The connection flow is the following: 1. The user s browser, through whatever firewall reverse proxy server is in use, requests a connection to Real-Time Collaboration. 2. Some sites choose to implement hardware-based disaster recovery solutions, often because economies of scale can be achieved by using a single solution for a multivendor database estate. For example, the EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) and HP Storage Works Continuous Access both ensure that all block changes on a storage array at one location are replicated at another location.

Within this chapter we introduced the concepts underlying RAC. We paid particular attention to Oracle Clusterware and the areas where RAC differs from a single-instance Oracle configuration. We also introduced a number of tools and utilities that you will want to consider using in a RAC environment. The information presented in this chapter provides the grounding for the installation and configuration of a RAC on Linux environment and also provides a reference for understanding the technology components you will encounter when building RAC on Linux systems.
