All access to the Real-Time Collaboration applications can be initiated over HTTP or HTTPS, but there is a limitation: the current release does not fully support the use of reverse proxy servers and load balancers. It is therefore necessary to configure the network in such a way that users can contact the Real-Time Collaboration server(s) directly. This is less likely to be an issue for internal users on the same intranet as the server but may be a problem for external users coming in through a corporate firewall. The initial contact with Oracle Collaboration Suite can be through whatever firewall and reverse proxy server is normally used, but the client-side Web Conferencing and Messenger consoles need to establish connections against the server itself. This can be accomplished either by making the address of the server directly routable by the firewall router, or by using a network address translation (NAT) device with port forwarding to map the server s external address to its internal address. In order to ensure that maximum security is maintained, it may be considered advisable to run the Real-Time Collaboration server on a middle tier node installed specifically for this. It will only be this node that need be directly routable to (or accessible through NAT) from the outside world. The other middle tier node(s) offering the other component application services (and Web Cache, Apache, the Single Sign-On access point, and all the other application components) can be protected by a reverse proxy server and load balancer in the usual fashion. Figure 12-1 shows a possible configuration that will minimize risk while making RealTime Collaboration available to external users.

Therefore, redo is propagated to the standby database by the L W process immediately at the point in time that it is committed on the GR primary database If the standby database is shut down, the primary database will also be shut down This ensures that every transaction is recorded in both locations Maximum availability: Some data loss is possible Redo is propagated to the standby database by the L W process immediately when it is committed on the primary database GR However, if the standby database fails, the primary database will continue generating redo This ensures that processing can continue, although there is a possibility of data loss in the event of the failure of both databases simultaneously Maximum performance; Data loss is probable in the event of a failure.

Redo is propagated from the primary to the standby database by either the L W process using an asynchronous GR copy, or by the A C process when a log file switch occurs In either case there is a delay RH before the redo is transferred to the standby database, and if the primary site fails there is a probability that redo will be lost Physical standby databases can be opened in read-only mode for limited reporting purposes It is possible to perform a switchover between the primary and standby database Processing is transferred to the standby database This is useful if, for example, it is necessary to shut down the primary database for site maintenance When the primary site is available again, it is possible to switch back between the standby site and the primary site Neither operation involves any data loss or requires rebuilding of the database.

It is also possible to perform a failover operation between the primary and standby database This is the real reason for maintaining a standby database, but, fortunately, failovers are a rare occurrence All processing will be moved to the standby database Prior to Oracle 102 it was necessary to rebuild the primary database following a failover, making it an expensive operation In Oracle 102 and above it is possible to avoid rebuilding the primary database if theflashbackdatabase feature was enabled prior to the failure Physical standby databases have been available since Oracle 73 and have become very popular in the Oracle user community Logical Standby A logical standby is initially created from a backup of the primary database However, a logical standby is maintained by replicating SQL statements that have been executed on the primary database.

It is possible to select which objects are maintained by the logical standby, and these can have different physical structures on the logical standby to the primary database For example, they can have different indexes or a different partitioning key The logical standby database can be opened.
