Once all of the trimmed surfaces have been converted into patches, we can begin to model the round edge between them Select the edge isoparms of the rectangular grill frame, duplicate the surface curves, and group the selection Move the curve back about 2 units in Z Make your way around the grill and loft each curve to the edge isoparm on the surface that it was derived from Make sure to do this on both the inside and outside of the grill frame The lofted surfaces are shown here: Select all of the lofted surfaces and then, in the Channel Box, set the Section Spans attribute to 3 This should give the lofts enough resolution that they hold their shape and produce a nice edge when attached to the frame Work your way around the frame again, this time attaching the lofted surfaces to the grill frame that was derived from the body You should also make a loft from the body side of the edge to the duplicate curves and attach these Once this process is complete, you will have the frame perfectly conforming to the rounded front end of the car with a nice, round edge between it and the body, as shown here Something like this would be very difficult to do with such precision on a polygon model

We will create the actual grill by extruding some simple profile curves along the same curves that conform to the round shape of the front of the car Begin by making visible the original front patch that we hid before we started trimming Move this surface back along the Z In the Front view, use the EP Curve tool to draw a line straight across the entire grill shape Duplicate and move this line three more times and position it so that all four curves are equidistant, as shown here: Select these four curves, select the original surface, and project them onto the surface In the Side view, draw a profile curve that can be used to extrude out the main grill pieces as shown adjacent to Step 18 Center the pivot on the curve Select the new profile curve, then select one of the curves on the surface that was just projected on Choose Surface | Extrude r to open the Options window for the Extrude command Set the Style to Tube, the Result Position to At Path, the Pivot to Component, and the Orientation to Profile Normal Click the Apply button Repeat this process for the other three curves Draw another set of curves that travel in the vertical direction and project Draw another profile curve and extrude it along these new curves on the surface The final grill is shown here:

Mirroring There is still a lot of work left to do on this model For one, there is an entire base portion that extends below the existing car body Plus, there are many panel seams that need rounding However, you can use the exact same procedures that we ve used to model the car thus far to finish it yourself We will revisit this model in 7 when we show techniques for converting NURBS models to polygons and show some subdivision surface modeling

Before mirroring, take another pass at the model with your eyes and make sure that you have matching parameterization between all of the patches Select all of the patches and group them (Edit | Group) Duplicate the group Set the Scale X value of the group to 1 This will create a mirror duplicate of your original surfaces Starting at one end of the model, select the two mirrored surfaces along the axis of symmetry and attach them Figure 6-24 shows both sides of the completed NURBS model It s a good idea to group everything again and create subgroups that have the different sections of the car named There are a lot of pieces here, so you want to do everything you can to make this model easy to read when you come back to it later The completed NURBS patch model

This brings us to the end of the NURBS modeling exercises in this book Throughout the two exercises, we ve demonstrated techniques that allow you to deal with just about any modeling problem While the steps you use are going to be about the same and the process very repetitive, every model you build will present its own unique set of challenges Good modeling requires a fair amount of experimentation and trial and error until the problem is solved
