A Hibernate extension cascading option can be used either as an addition to the options already set on the association annotation (first and last example) or as a stand-alone setting if no standardized option applies (second example). Hibernate s association-level cascade style model is both richer and less safe than persistence by reachability. Hibernate doesn t make the same strong guarantees of referential integrity that persistence by reachability provides. Instead, Hibernate partially delegates referential integrity concerns to the foreign key constraints of the underlying SQL database. There is a good reason for this design decision: It allows Hibernate applications to use detached objects efficiently, because you can control reattachment and merging of a detached object graph at the association level. But cascading options aren t available only to avoid unnecessary reattachment or merging: They re useful whenever you need to handle more than one object at a time. Let s elaborate on the transitive state concept with some example association mappings. We recommend that you read the next section in one turn, because each example builds on the previous one.

Windows XP Professional supports extending volumes on both basic and dynamic disks. You extend volumes on basic disks by using the Diskpart command-line utility. You can extend volumes on dynamic disks by using either the Disk Management utility or the Diskpart command-line utility. Extending Volumes on Basic Disks You can extend primary partitions and logical drives on basic disks if the following conditions are met:

The volume to be extended is formatted with the NTFS file system. The volume is extended into contiguous unallocated space (adjacent free space) that follows the existing volume (as opposed to coming before it). The volume is extended on the same hard disk. Volumes on basic disks cannot be extended to include disk space on another hard disk. The volume is not the system or boot volume. The system or boot volumes cannot be extended.

WSUS groups are separate from Active Directory security groups. Administrators can manually assign computers to groups using the WSUS console after the computer has contacted the WSUS server. Large numbers of computers can be added to existing WSUS groups using the Enable Client-Side Targeting Group Policy item. Figure 8-6 shows the Enable ClientSide Targeting policy configured so that the computers that the policy applies to are made members of both the Accounting and Research WSUS groups. If a group that does not exist on the WSUS server is specified in the client-side targeting policy, the WSUS computer account is added to the Unassigned Computers group.

Extending Volumes on Dynamic Disks You can extend a simple volume as long as it has been formatted with NTFS. You do this by attaching additional unallocated space from the same disk, or from a different disk, to an existing simple volume. Disk space that is used to extend a simple volume does not have to be contiguous. If the additional space comes from a different disk, the volume becomes a spanned volume. Spanned volumes can contain disk space from 2 to 32 disks. If the volume is not formatted with NTFS, you must convert the volume to NTFS before you can extend it.
