Purpose The root of each volume on a hard disk is automatically shared, and the share name is the drive letter with a dollar sign ($). When you connect to this folder, you have access to the entire volume. You use the administrative shares to remotely connect to the computer to perform administrative tasks. Windows XP Professional assigns the Full Control permission to the Administrators group. The system root folder, which is C:\Windows by default, is shared as Admin$. Administrators can access this shared folder to administer Windows XP Professional without knowing in which folder it is installed. Only members of the Administrators group have access to this share. Windows XP Professional assigns the Full Control permission to the Administrators group. When you install the first shared printer, the %systemroot%\System32\ Spool\Drivers folder is shared as Print$. This folder provides access to printer driver files for clients. Only members of the Administrators and Power Users groups have the Full Control permission. The Everyone group has the Read permission.

You should also download a current version of HSQLDB from http://hsqldb.org/ and extract the package; you ll use this database management system for your tests. If you have another database management system already installed, you only need to obtain a JDBC driver for it. Instead of the sophisticated application you ll develop later in the book, you ll get started with a Hello World example. That way, you can focus on the development process without getting distracted by Hibernate details. Let s set up the project directory first. Hidden shared folders are not limited to those that the system automatically creates. You can share an additional hidden share by simple adding a dollar sign to the end of the share name. Only users who know the folder name can access it if they also possess the proper permissions.

You often can use the built-in administrative shares to access resources on a computer when you cannot otherwise gain access. In particular, the Admin$ share is useful because it allows you to access the system root folder of a computer. You can also type the drive letter followed by a dollar sign (for example, C$) to access a particular drive.

The libraries you see in the library directory are from the Hibernate distribution, most of them required for a typical Hibernate project. The hsqldb.jar file is from the HSQLDB distribution; replace it with a different driver JAR if you want to use a different database management system. Keep in mind that some of the libraries you re seeing here may not be required for the particular version of Hibernate you re working with, which is likely a newer release than we used when writing this book. To make sure you have the right set of libraries, always check the lib/ README.txt file in the Hibernate distribution package. This file contains an up-todate list of all required and optional third-party libraries for Hibernate you only need the libraries listed as required for runtime. In the Hello World application, you want to store messages in the database and load them from the database. You need to create the domain model for this business case.
